What is the Your Life in Weeks visualization?
Popularized by Tim Urban’s essay “Your Life in Weeks,” this visualization shows your entire lifespan as a grid of small squares — each one representing a single week. Most people have around 4,000 weeks on Earth, and many of them are already gone.
How is it calculated?
Enter your date of birth and expected lifespan. The calculator computes how many weeks have passed since you were born. Each filled square is a completed week. The bright square is the current week you’re living right now.
Why is this useful?
Seeing your life as a finite grid makes abstract time feel real and visual. It’s not meant to be depressing — it’s meant to help you think clearly about how you want to spend the time you have left.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many weeks does the average person live?
With a life expectancy of 80 years, that’s about 4,160 weeks. Most people are surprised by how small that number feels when they see it as a grid.
Who invented this visualization?
The concept was popularized by blogger Tim Urban in his 2014 essay “Your Life in Weeks” on the Wait But Why blog.
Can I change the expected lifespan?
Yes — the default is 80 years but you can enter any number up to 120.
Is this meant to be depressing?
Not at all. Most people report feeling motivated rather than sad. Seeing the weeks you have left makes it clear there’s plenty of time to do meaningful things.
How is each row organized?
Each row represents one year of life. Each cell is one week. So the grid has 52 columns and as many rows as your expected lifespan in years.
